Day 10 -- Rescued

We have a three strike rule.  #1 - failed equipment and #2 - BAD weather coming.  We don't want to wait for number three so we headed south toward home.  Our weather guru, Terry Carbonell, helped with a safe route of flight.  If we could get the new Dynon shipped to one of our stops, we could possibly make a repair and keep going.  Otherwise, we would have to cut our trip short.   We landed in 16 states of our 24 goal and are proud.  We stopped at KCDW (Essex County or Caldwell, NJ) for fuel and a review of the weather.  Then we beelined to to KFDK (Frederick, MD - the home of AOPA).  Ninety - Nine, Lin Caywood, and her sweetie, Carlo Cilliers, welcomed us wayward pilots into their home.

Also, Carlo is my new hero.  He helped us when we landed and got a hangar for the night.  Carlo is a master mechanic is is willing to replace the unit if Dynon can get it to Frederick.  He installed a Dynon Skyview, just like ours, in his Mustang II so he is really experienced with the unit.

We had a delicious dinner with Lin and went to sleep early!  Claudette and I were both exhausted after a safe flight from NH to MD.  The conditions were VFR with somewhat limited visibility.

ADM is a constant process for a pilot to remain safe.  To all of our fellow pilots, keep managing risk by making safe decisions, using all resources possible.

  1. I like your ADM. The first "mission" of any "mission" is safety. Kudos for keeping the real goal of a safe journey number one on the priority list!

  2. Hello, Aviatrixes,
Wow, what a tough break with the Dynon display. I so agree with you Myra, about knowing the 'Why' of something having failed especially electronic. That would plague me at night as well. Do you know if Dynon will trouble shoot the failed/broken display to see what happened to it when they get it back? If so, I'm pretty sure you'll be interested in knowing what they find out if anything.

This is from the bottom of my heart about safety. Myra, I believe you picked one of the very safest pilots around as your co-pilot. I'm not talking as her husband or her BMF, but as someone who has seen her in action by herself and with others literally thousands of times when there are multiple decisions to be made and which course of action is safest! Claudette takes only reasonable prudent risks in life and of course, especially in aviation. I don't worry about her fling at all because I know she will always advocate on the side of caution, prudence and safety.

Myra and Claudette you are extremely fortunate to have connected with everyone so far. What a guy Mr. CARLO CILLIERS! Three CHEERS for you kind & good sir, for helping these great women out and saving the day with installing the new Dynon display.

    Now about the photos:
Wow, visibility sucks going into Essex County, NJ (KCDW). It looks like it could be raining, the visibility is so poor.
Really nice airplane. I'll have to check out the Mustang II.
Nice photo of MOJO coming in. Yuck, that cloud cover over MOJO doesn't look like fun.
Great approach shot into KFDK! You are lined up perfect and looking very good. Merci, madame for including it.
Very neat that you two squeezed in a trip to ‘Mecca for pilots’ (AOPA Headquarters)!
Wouldn't it be fun to win that YELLOW beauty? Next year is it? For those of you who are not pilots; every year, I believe it is every year, the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has a drawing for their give-away airplane. The YELLOW RV10 in Myra's photo is I believe the AOPA'S 2020 give away airplane. Anyone can submit an entry. However, now that I've told all the readers of this blog about this drawing, you have to promise to give me the YELLOW RV10 should you be the lucky person. :-)
Standing by to read the result of the 2020 AOPA Airplane drawing.

  3. Please excuse the typo in my 4:14 comment above (fling should be flying) or maybe it was a Freudian slip? :-)
